Re-Evaluate & Re-Arrange
My very first design job kind of fell into my lap. In fact, I’m pretty sure I was hired out of pity. My client explained to me that the bedroom space needed to be de-cluttered, organized and I was to re-arrange the furniture as I see fit. She provided me with an envelope of cash and told me to use the funds to purchase what I needed to complete the job; anything leftover was mine to keep.
It was a dreary January day, I was 19 - home from college for winter break. My client, was my mother. The space, was my sister’s bedroom.
I was bored and broke. While cleaning, organizing and styling a bedroom space may not seem like a fun for everyone, but - I was in my element.
Who doesn’t love a good before and after? So, I went to work. I hung up clothes, sorted through tangled jewelry and rearranged the furniture in a way that maximized the small space. Then I went to Target and bought an “assembly yourself” shelving unit. Once that was together, I styled books, trophies, photos etc.. onto the shelves in a visual appealing way. A couple new pillows for the bed, a piece of art and a new lamp - done and done.
When my mom came home, she was pleased. So much so, she hired me to do my brother’s room next.
Never doubt the power of re-arranging a room. Sometimes all it takes is some shuffling of furniture and a handful of new accessories to achieve a whole new look.
New England winter is long and we are stuck inside, a lot. Try moving the couch to the other side of the room - or switch the bed from up against a wall to the middle, under a window. Mix it up!
The photo here is of my first house. I chose it because while we lived here, we were on a budget. Which is what happens when you buy your first home and have your first child - bills and babies, ‘em I right?
Anyway, the point being - to make our house feel more like home, I would re-arrange, hunt for deals and then do it all over again as our lifestyle changed. Because lets face it, once the kid begins to walk - re-arranging gets a bit more creative with breakables!
If your stuck in a space that still does not feel like home, contact us. Like I said earlier, I’ve been doing this professionally since I’m 19 :)
We can work with what you have, then bring in some fun new styling pieces to give your room an entirely new look and feel, without breaking the bank.
Cheers!
